about

The project “Jazz Standards in the Tambrin Sauce” seeks to situate the Tobago Tambrin, an indigenous instrument of Tobago in the popular language of the Jazz Idiom. This project marks a paradigm shift for the Tobago Tambrin as it brings the instrument full scale into the global picture of world music and new instruments. The reflection on this project is worthy of mention as it entailed a lot of organic moments.
The project features local musicians Khalen ‘Ja Moi’ Alexander, Savio Providence and Caryll Warner. When asked about collaborating with local artistes John shared the organic process of the sessions, “ when I asked Khalen to start imitating the reel and jig beat on the drums….and then I spontaneously started to play ‘Fly me to the moon’ taking into consideration the feel of the folk style, It was amazing that when the bassist Savro arrived and I explained to him the concept, he just grooved a solid bass line to match the final take of the song. Caryll did the same on the violin. The Tambrin was the zest to the pot”
The six songs chosen were specially selected as they spoke to different timings such as 5/4, 3/4 and 4/4, and were all established standards well known to many jazz enthusiasts.
The Tobago Tambrin is usually played in the folk setting and is very popular with folk dances such as jig, reel, passe and heel and toe. It is also popular as part of the Tobago Tambrin Band in rituals such as weddings and funeral.
The album seeks to fuse the tambrin sound and playing into the traditional mix of jazz music similar to how many sub genres of jazz was created. This is an innovative attempt to position the Tambrin instrument into the mix and discussion of instrumentation for jazz forms and styles.
The album will be launched virtually at 3pm on Sunday September 19th, in collaboration with Lion’s Den Studio on their social media platforms.
